Chapter 1022 Re-settling
Chapter 1022 Re-settling
Upon hearing this, Grandpa Zhang clasped his hands in a fist and said, "Be careful on your journey."
Then Wu Mingqiang whispered a few words in A Si's ear, and A Si nodded, bowed to Gui'er, and quickly walked out of the gate and headed out of the village.
Gui'er found it strange and asked, "What is Fourth Brother going to do?"
Wu Mingqiang pulled her hand and walked quickly toward the truck, saying as they walked, "He's going to visit that manager's house. We need to find someone to keep an eye on his family, otherwise he might report us."
When they arrived at the truck, Gui'er saw that the driver was a slightly overweight man in his forties wearing a white shirt and black trousers.
"Manager Liu, this is the last person. We can leave now." Wu Mingqiang said as he helped Gui'er into the carriage.
He closed the car door, tore off the tarpaulin and covered it, then walked to the front and sat in the passenger seat.
When Gui'er saw that everyone else in the carriage had squatted down, she followed suit and squatted down as well.
The car started, and the country road was uneven, causing the car to shake quite violently as it drove. Everyone squatted quietly in a tense atmosphere.
The carriage was completely dark, covered by a canvas, with only light coming through the glass window connected to the driver's cab.
Zheng Huaichang walked to the glass window, turned sideways, and occasionally peeked out.
Gui'er was used to riding in cars, but riding in this big truck was a completely different story. The country roads were uneven, and the truck was swaying from side to side as it moved forward. The driver didn't seem to care about the people behind him and kept accelerating. Soon, she started to feel nauseous. When she looked up, she saw that the others looked unwell as well, probably all of them carsick. Even Zheng Huaichang was frowning and swallowing hard every now and then.
"Brother Chang, I feel like throwing up sitting on this thing," a young bodyguard whispered.
"Bear with it, we'll be there soon. We don't know where we are, and if we stop here, we'll be in trouble if we're discovered."
No one spoke up again, and after a while, the car slowed down.
Zheng Huaichang went to check again and said, "Be careful! We're about to enter the city."
Everyone's spirits immediately lifted.
Sure enough, soon enough, some sounds came from outside.
"Beautiful fruit, cheap sale!" "Vegetables, vegetables!" "Come and see the fresh river fish!"
"How much per kilogram?" "Can you give me a discount?"
Gui'er heard the hawking outside and guessed that this must be a market in the urban-rural fringe area.
The road here is noticeably smoother, and the car ride feels much smoother.
After a while, the surroundings gradually quieted down.
After driving a short distance further, the car suddenly stopped.
Wu Mingqiang got out of the car, walked to the back, lifted the canvas, and said, "We've arrived. Quick, unload the goods."
Everyone quickly jumped out of the car, and Gui'er then realized that this was a secluded warehouse. It looked like a factory with a half-new wooden sign above the gate that read "Guangzhou Daily Chemical Factory" in black letters on a white background. However, the place was completely empty, with not a single person in sight. It must have been emptied out before the Japanese invaded.
"Quick, move the stuff down to that room, it's not inconspicuous," the fat man driving said, pointing to a room.
Everyone quickly started moving it; with many hands making light work, they finished moving it in no time.
"Manager Liu, I really owe you a lot this time. You even helped me find such a great place," Wu Mingqiang said to the fat man with a smile.
"Don't mention it, we're all Chinese, but I took a huge risk doing this," Manager Liu said, glancing at Wu Mingqiang.
"Don't worry, Manager Liu is so generous, we won't treat you unfairly. I've already sent my brothers to your house to deliver the payment. You'll be going back to the hotel later, so it's not convenient for you to take those things with you, right?"
"You...you know my home?" Manager Liu was very surprised.
"Look at what you're saying. Last time I came to Guangzhou to drink with you, you said you'd invite me to your house. It was too late then, so I couldn't go. This time it's probably inconvenient for me to go either, so I'm asking my brother to take the gifts and payment to your house to thank you properly."
Manager Liu's expression turned somewhat strange upon hearing this, but he still smiled and said, "Brother, you're too kind. However, my family consists of women, children, and inexperienced people. I'm afraid you'll find it embarrassing."
Wu Mingqiang waved his hand and said, "We're all on the same side, why bother with these things? By the way, the goods have all been moved. My brothers are going to stay here to watch over the goods for a few days. That should be fine, right?"
Manager Liu smiled and said, "Of course it's alright. This is being looked after by an old friend of mine. When the Japanese came, the owner had already run away and he wasn't getting paid, so he simply stopped coming. There might be one or two homeless people who use this place as their home, but since you're here claiming to be the gatekeepers, you can just drive them away."
“Alright.” Wu Mingqiang turned to Zheng Huaichang and the comrades in charge of escorting the goods and instructed them: “You guys stay here. Young Master and I will go find the comrades to make contact with and wait for Comrade Deng Jun to arrive.”
One of the bodyguards asked, "Then how are we supposed to eat?"
"Don't worry, I'll bring it back to you."
Afterwards, Wu Mingqiang pulled Gui'er into Manager Liu's truck, and after about half an hour of driving, they arrived at the back of a building after many twists and turns.
Manager Liu stopped the car. Pointing to the back door of the building, he said, "Go up from here. If anyone asks, just say I called you here to fix something. I've already booked a room, room 403 on the 4th floor. Once you're in the room, don't go out."
Wu Mingqiang said, "Thank you." Then he pulled Gui'er upstairs.
"Hey, hey, Mr. Wu, about the payment..."
"Manager Liu, do you not trust me? I've already told you that my brother went to your house to deliver gifts and payment."
"Hehe, you can't trust anyone these days. If you don't give it to me, I'll find a way to earn it back."
Upon hearing this, Wu Mingqiang stopped, walked step by step closer to Manager Liu with his hands behind his back, and Manager Liu subconsciously stepped back, laughing and saying, "Just kidding, I believe Mr. Wu is not one of those people who don't follow the rules."
Wu Mingqiang grabbed his hand, and Manager Liu panicked and tried to pull his hand back, but it was clamped tightly and he couldn't break free.
He was in a panic when Wu Mingqiang slipped a few silver dollars into his hand. He said, "Don't worry, I, Wu, will never mistreat those who help me. Take these silver dollars and have some tea. My brother has already delivered the reward. He's not feeling well and will be staying at your house for a few days. You should go back and check on him."
Manager Liu, still shaken, stared at the silver dollar in his hand for a long time before awkwardly saying, "Okay, I'll go back and check right away."
