Chapter 111 Milton's Relics
Chapter 111 Milton's Relics
When Larry saw Agreed staring at the weapons in the cabinets, he immediately shouted, "Those are not for sale. I don't sell finished products here. If you need anything, you can tell me what kind of weapon you want to customize."
Agreed turned around and explained, “I…I’m a friend of Milton’s. My name is Agreed. I heard that you and he get along best in this country, so I came here to…talk to you.”
Larry looked at him as if he were thinking about something. After a long while, he suddenly said something surprising: "My friend, I am glad you can come here. There is something Milton left here that was indeed left for you." After saying that, Larry went to the inner room and found a rectangular box, a book and a letter. Then he took these items to Agreed and handed them over.
Agreed took the three items and asked in surprise, "How...how did you know I was undead?"
Larry explained casually, “About four years ago, one night just as Milton was about to send you his gift, he received a letter from his hometown. The letter said that the human kingdoms had been completely taken over by an organization called the ‘Church of Light.’ Milton cried bitterly that night. He told me that his best friend, Agreed, had died at the hands of the Church of Light… And I think no one would impersonate that name, so there’s only one possibility: you’ve come back from the dead. I’m old enough to have seen all sorts of strange things in the mines over the years, so it’s normal for me to guess. But the most crucial thing is that when you were talking to me, you weren’t speaking the dwarven language at all, yet I could understand your meaning perfectly. Without even thinking, I don’t need to doubt that you were using the soul communication unique to high-level undead. Am I even slightly wrong?”
Upon hearing this, Agred immediately bowed and said, "You truly are a master. Your eyesight is exceptional and your judgment is spot on. I have learned a great deal from you."
Larry waved his hand dismissively and said, "No need, but I still want to remind you of two things. As an undead, you may sometimes be powerless to do what you want, but you must have a bottom line. If you indiscriminately kill innocent people and do evil, then you will truly be letting down the work that Milton created for you."
After listening, Agreed nodded and solemnly promised, "I will."
Afterwards, Agreed left the blacksmith's shop with the items. He found a secluded corner and opened the letter, which read:
To my old friend Agreed
My friend, you've probably defeated the Church of Light by now. Whether unifying the human kingdoms under your rule is a good thing or a bad thing is hard to say. Please forgive my selfishness and cowardice. I really couldn't face all of this, so I chose to run away. I'm sorry.
I have now arrived in the dwarven kingdom of Ifiltal, the paradise of all enchanters' dreams. Here, I have come into contact with entirely new knowledge and witnessed divine weapons that are far beyond the reach of human craftsmanship. It is a pity that I cannot share all of this with you. Here, I have come into contact with another enchanting system unique to dwarves that fascinates me: 'Runes'. It is more advanced than our enchanting methods. The advantage of Runes is that the effects they apply do not require magic crystals for magic power supply. The runes automatically draw on the power of nature to keep the rune effects active.
Although engraving runes requires more space, its efficiency is enough to overshadow other shortcomings. Then I suddenly remembered your words, "The legendary sword can't be your best work." You're right. In this kingdom, I suddenly discovered the possibility of going further.
So I decided to give you a weapon far more powerful than the legendary sword as a gift to atone for my sins. I had a new friend I met here, Larry Kuliman Ephesus, use his life's work and the finest materials to forge you a supreme sword far more powerful than the legendary sword. I then spent three months enchanting it under the guidance of fourteen rune masters. I can assure you that it is absolutely one of the most powerful weapons in the world, the best work I, Milton Usopp, have ever created.
Accept it, my friend. May you lead humanity to prosperity and strength. I will never return. I will dedicate my life to mastering runes, to establishing a school that combines human enchanting with runes, ushering in a new era for this world!
"Your old friend, Milton"
After reading it, Agreed sadly folded the letter back up exactly as it was, then put it away and used magic to send it into his private space.
Then Agred opened the rectangular box, which contained a beautiful sword about 1.2 meters long. It looked like an enlarged version of the Sword of Goujian, King of Yue. The hilt was also lengthened to match the extended and heavy blade, and it was carefully engraved with many patterns to increase friction so that the wielder could use it more easily. The guard (the part connecting the hilt and the blade to prevent the hand from slipping on the blade when swinging) was a magnificent dragon mouth sculpture for connection and protection. Overall, it looked majestic and imposing.
The real key was the dense, strange script on the sword's blade—the runes Milton had mentioned. The empty spaces where runes couldn't be inscribed were filled with enchanted magic circles, perfectly utilizing every inch of the sword's space. After examining it for a while, Agreed carefully placed the sword back into its box and stored it in his personal space. Now that he was an undead, although his magic was powerful, he was powerless in close combat due to the power difference. This sword had just solved his weakness. He hadn't expected his old friend to help him again after his death, and he had no way to repay him.
As he thought of this, Agreed's soul fire dimmed as if to express his sorrow. Then Agreed took out the book again and saw a few large words that caught his eye.
"The Enchanting Encyclopedia - by Milton"
Agreed carefully opened this rare book. The language in the encyclopedia was the most widely used common language on the continent. Moreover, the cover of the enchanted encyclopedia was actually engraved with a translation circle that could directly translate the contents into the reader's mind through pure soul language. However, this required the reader to be unguarded with their soul, otherwise the circle would have no effect at all.
Argreed immediately activated the translation array and used his soul to thoroughly study all the contents of the book in less than a few minutes. The book was clearly a work in progress, with many things still incomplete at the beginning.
Agred held the book and thought for a while, then suddenly stood up and went back to Master Larry's blacksmith shop. He knocked on the door, then pushed it open and said, "Master Larry, I'd like to talk to you some more."
Larry was enjoying a pipe and some premium tobacco cakes he'd gotten from an old acquaintance when he saw Agreed's anxious expression. He took the pipe out of his mouth, exhaled a thick cloud of white smoke, and asked suspiciously, "Why haven't you left yet? What's wrong? Is there something you haven't sorted out here?"
