Chapter 48 Exploring the Wildlife Park
Chapter 48 Exploring the Wildlife Park
DAY72
Lu Yuan didn't sleep well at all that night. He had nightmares all night, dreaming about the zombie he saw in the base dormitory during the second viral rain, and the zombie in a suit he observed by the hotel's floor-to-ceiling window that afternoon.
They were all highly intelligent zombies. Lu Yuan dreamed that he was being chased by these two zombies and a group of first-generation zombies. In order to survive, he kept running, his heart was pounding, his mind was blank, until his legs felt as heavy as lead.
Lu Yuan, who was too exhausted to run any further, finally stopped. However, the two second-generation zombies leading a group of zombies did not rush up. A layer of white light appeared in front of Lu Yuan; it was a defensive sphere.
Inside the defensive sphere, besides himself, there was another figure. The other person quickly pulled the stunned Lu Yuan aside, and then a modified military armored vehicle appeared in front of him. They got into the vehicle, and the zombies chased after them for a long time until Lu Yuan could no longer see them...
Lu Yuan realized who this person was—the one who had given him the spatial ring. However, when he turned his head, all he saw was a figure in the white light; he couldn't make out the person's face at all. But Lu Yuan could see that the person was smiling at him in the white light, saying, "You must live well..."
Lu Yuan tried to touch the person's face, but he missed and then sat up abruptly in bed. The phone on the bedside table showed six in the morning, which was very early, but the sun, radiating immense heat, was already visible through the curtains.
Lu Yuan took a shower in the bathroom attached to the room. He kept running in his dream, which made him wake up to find himself covered in sweat, feeling sticky and uncomfortable.
After getting ready, Lin Yun came out of the room. It was almost seven o'clock. Lin Yun was washing up in the bathroom, and the others hadn't come out yet. Lu Yuan took out breakfast for seven people from his spatial storage and placed it on the dining table. Then, he took his own portion and walked to the French windows, parted the curtains a little, and began to observe through binoculars.
Lin Yun had just finished washing up when the others came out one after another. Pei Sihao and Gu Nanfeng's single rooms, like Lu Yuan's, had bathrooms, so they came out after washing up. Pei Sihao went to the dining table, picked up his breakfast, and started eating. Gu Nanfeng, like Lu Yuan, took his breakfast and walked to the other side of the curtains by the French windows, peeking through a crack to observe.
Lin Yun sat down to have breakfast with Pei Sihao. In the bathroom, Qin Yuan and Zhong Qiang were fighting over the toilet. After a lot of bickering, they finally took over the bathroom in Lu Yuan and Gu Nanfeng's room, and the three of them were able to wash up smoothly.
Their first stop today is the park's zoo to see if all the animals are missing. Although Pei Simin disagreed with their risky behavior on the phone, how could they possibly be obedient?
After finishing breakfast, the seven packed up the equipment they had prepared the day before, picked out their favorite cookies and drinks from Lu Yuan's space, and set off.
Stepping out of the room and into the elevator is safe. The moment the elevator doors open is when they face danger. Fortunately, this is the main building's VIP elevator, originally designed for SVIP rooms on floors 5-6. If a customer enters, the elevator will go directly to the customer's desired floor without stopping in between. This is the treatment the wealthy enjoy, and it's their good fortune.
Qin Yuan and Lin Yun stood silently at the elevator door. As soldiers, they had the instinct to protect the people, and they were the only two among them who had received systematic training. They couldn't let five college students who were "weak and powerless" take the lead.
When the elevator reached the second floor, Qin Yuan and Lin Yun drew their sidearms, loaded them, and set them up. Crossbows were too slow to reload, so using guns was the safest option in this situation. Although they hadn't brought many bullets with them on this trip, and Lin Yun had used one when they came in the day before yesterday, they thought bullets were consumables for them and they had to conserve them. However, little did they know that Lu Yuan had plenty in his spatial storage.
The elevator smoothly arrived at the first floor, where their G-Class was parked in the lobby opposite the elevator. As long as they safely exited the elevator, they could get into the car without any problems.
Unexpectedly, no zombies appeared outside the elevator doors, but their G-Wagon was reduced to pieces! The fragments on the ground were clearly the result of being torn apart by hundreds of zombies. The seven became even more cautious, which told them that there were at least a hundred zombies in the park, while they had only observed about ten.
Under Qin Yuan's command, the seven people retreated back to the elevator lobby. Just as he was about to have everyone retreat to the sixth floor before making further plans, Lu Yuan behind him spoke up, "Proceed according to the original plan!"
At the same time, an armored vehicle appeared at the elevator entrance. This vehicle was clearly not a Chinese vehicle and had no license plates. Lin Yun knew cars and could tell at a glance that it was an E-class armored vehicle. He looked at Lu Yuan incredulously.
Lu Yuan did not offer any further explanation. The seven of them quickly got into the car, with Pei Sihao driving, explaining that he had previously participated in an exchange activity with Country E while serving in the Beijing military and had test-driven this type of armored vehicle.
The zombies in the hotel probably never expected that after dismantling their G-Wagon, they would pull out an armored vehicle. After Lu Yuan got into the car, he felt a pair of eyes watching him from behind, but when he closed the door and looked out the window, he saw nothing.
Yesterday, Gu Nanfeng connected to most of the hotel's electronic devices using the master control password provided by Gu Yining. This allowed them to open the automatic doors in the hotel lobby remotely from inside the armored vehicle without having to get out of the car, greatly increasing their security.
With the armored vehicle's assistance, they drove safely to the wildlife park at the very back of the park. Once inside the park's private driveway, the armored vehicle looked even more conspicuous. They moved slowly forward, and apart from Pei Sihao who was driving attentively, the other six people looked around through the safety windows. However, as they expected, they still didn't see a single animal, whether it was running on land, swimming in water, or flying in the sky—nothing at all.
According to the information Gu Yining found, this wildlife park in the G City resort area should have at least a hundred animals, but now none of them have disappeared. This is very illogical. Even if the zombies here hid them all, how big of a place would it take to hide hundreds of animals?
"Could there be spaces among the zombies?" Zhong Qiang's eyes were blurry from looking, but he still hadn't seen a single animal, so he muttered to himself.
"But you can't put living things in the space." Lu Yuan was also puzzled. If zombies also had spaces, they should be similar to his, right? Otherwise, do they have different styles of spaces?
"But zombies don't need to eat, so why do they hide animals?" This was Yang Xiao's soul-searching question.
"It's probably like how zombies guard large supermarkets, warehouses, and markets; they do it to prevent humans from getting animals," Lin Yun analyzed. "Zombies can survive without food, but humans can't. Animals are crucial for reproduction. As long as there are animals, humans can continue to survive even if they don't have other food for the time being."
"Old Lin is right, especially for us Chinese. What animal can't we eat?" Qin Yuan also supported Lin Yun's analysis.
"This is really going to starve us to death!" Pei Sihao remarked as he drove.
They couldn't find out if there were any zombies with spatial abilities among the zombies, or why all the animals had disappeared. But after walking around the wildlife park, they were certain that there wasn't a single animal left.
