Chapter 143 Daydreaming
Chapter 143 Daydreaming
Upon hearing this, Zhang Guang frowned.
"I didn't say anything, I was just asking..."
Liu lay down and tucked the blanket in, saying impatiently:
"It's none of your business, don't even ask. Go to sleep. Today, I've been running around all day dealing with your brother's wedding. I'm exhausted, and no one has shown me any concern!"
After saying that, she turned her body away and went to sleep.
Zhang Guang looked at his wife's back, sighed silently, pulled the blanket up a little, and fell into a deep sleep.
the next morning,
Before Su Tao even opened her eyes, she heard a loud knocking on the door.
"Oh, still sleeping? What time is it? Don't you know you're supposed to serve tea to your mother-in-law today? Is this how a new bride acts on her very first day in the household?"
Hearing this, Su Tao, who was still half asleep, quickly got up, dressed, and patted Zhang Feng, who was sleeping soundly.
"Husband, get up quickly, it's time to serve tea to Mother. My sister-in-law is waiting outside!"
Zhang Feng, who was still soundly asleep, dared not sleep any longer upon hearing the words "sister-in-law." He quickly got out of bed, dressed, and pulled Su Tao out of the room.
Liu Shi stood with her hands on her hips, sizing up the two of them with a displeased look in her eyes. Zhang Feng quickly smiled ingratiatingly and said:
"Please don't be offended, sister-in-law. I drank a bit too much yesterday, so I got up a little late today."
Liu snorted coldly and looked at Su Tao.
"My second brother drank too much yesterday. Could it be that his wife also drank too much? Why hasn't she gotten up by this hour?"
Su Tao looked up at the still dim light of dawn. She had never gotten up this early when she was at her parents' home. How come she couldn't even get a full night's sleep now that she was married?
Just as Su Tao was about to speak, Zhang Feng squeezed her hand, then smiled and looked at Madam Liu.
"Sister-in-law, please don't be angry. Su Tao is new here and doesn't know the rules. You can teach her slowly later. Right now, I'll take her to serve tea to Mother."
Seeing Zhang Feng say this, Liu waved her hand in response.
"Alright, alright, he looks like a slow learner. I'll just have to teach him slowly later. You two go quickly, don't keep your mother waiting."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Feng acted as if he had received a pardon, and hurriedly pulled Su Tao towards the main room.
Su Tao frowned, squeezed Zhang Feng's hand, and whispered:
"Husband, why didn't you let me speak just now?"
Zhang Feng turned and smiled at Su Tao.
“Daughter-in-law, that’s our sister-in-law. Just listen to what she says and don’t argue with her, lest you cause trouble in the household.”
Upon hearing this, Su Tao's expression stiffened. Whatever Liu said was law. If she were to refute it, would that mean she was causing trouble in the household?
Before Su Tao could even ask a question, Zhang Feng had already pulled her to Granny Zhang's side.
Granny Zhang was sitting in the main seat of the hall. When she saw the two enter, she immediately looked at Zhang Feng and Su Tao holding hands.
Upon seeing this, Zhang Feng reacted as if he had been electrocuted, immediately releasing his hand and rubbing it awkwardly.
"Mother, I drank too much yesterday and got up late, which made me late."
Granny Zhang smiled at Zhang Feng.
"Good son, I know you've worked hard. You should get some more sleep."
Then he turned to look at Su Tao.
"Su Tao, you're sleeping in late on your very first day of marriage. Are you trying to set a rule for the Zhang family?"
Upon hearing this, Su Tao quickly waved her hand and said:
"No, no, mother-in-law, how could I..."
Before Su Tao could finish speaking, Madam Liu had already brought in a bowl of piping hot tea.
"There's no reason for you to stand while serving tea to your mother-in-law! Kneel down right now!"
Liu shouted loudly, startling Su Tao into immediately kneeling down obediently. Seeing this, Liu didn't stand on ceremony and directly shoved an empty teacup into Su Tao's hand, then poured freshly boiled hot water into the teacup.
Whether intentionally or unintentionally, the tea was poured into the cup one moment and onto Su Tao's hand the next. Su Tao winced in pain but dared not utter a sound. Her hand instantly turned red.
Seeing this, Zhang Feng felt sorry for her and said:
"Alright, sister-in-law, it'll be full if you pour any more."
Liu glanced at Zhang Feng impatiently, then put away the hot water and walked outside.
Su Banxia knelt down, holding a teacup, and tremblingly offered it to Granny Zhang, saying in a tearful voice,
"Mother-in-law, please have some tea!"
Old Lady Zhang sneered at the sight.
"Oh, so you're not happy serving me tea?"
Su Tao hurriedly endured the pain in her hand and shook her head to explain:
"No, no, mother-in-law, I... I'm just a first-time bride and I don't know the proper etiquette..."
Upon hearing this, Granny Zhang nodded in satisfaction and pointed to the tea table beside her.
"Put down the tea and go get busy. I still have something to say to Feng'er."
Su Tao glanced at Zhang Feng with a wronged expression, then put down her teacup and left.
Granny Zhang talked with Zhang Feng inside the house for a while before letting him out. Su Tao, who was chopping wood, immediately dropped the firewood and ran to Zhang Feng when she saw him come out.
"Husband, what did Mother say to you?"
Zhang Feng scratched his head somewhat awkwardly.
"I didn't say anything, just chatting about everyday things. I still have work to do at Muxiangzhai today, so I have to go first. If you have anything to say, discuss it with your mother and sister-in-law."
Su Tao was immediately shocked upon hearing this.
"Husband, won't you take me with you to the city?"
Zhang Feng glanced at Su Tao impatiently.
"What are you saying? Even I live in the backyard of Muxiangzhai now. If I take you to the city, where will you have a place to stay? I can't let you live in Muxiangzhai, can I?"
As he spoke, Zhang Feng patted Su Tao's shoulder and said softly:
“Right now, we need someone to help with the chores at home. You should stay home and help your mother and sister-in-law with some things. If you make your mother happy, she might give us some money to rent a house in the city. Then you can move to the city.”
Su Tao grabbed Zhang Feng's sleeve nervously and said:
"But, but you clearly promised my mother before the wedding that you would take me to live in the city. Why have you changed your mind now?"
Zhang Feng frowned and forcefully shook off Su Tao's hand.
“When did I ever say such a thing? Besides, we have a house at home, so it’s not like you don’t have a place to live. Why do you insist on coming to live with me in the city? Before we got married, I never realized you were such a vain woman!”
After saying that, Zhang Feng turned around and went inside to pack his things.
Su Tao was left standing there, stunned, staring blankly at Zhang Feng's retreating figure, muttering to herself:
"This, this is different from what we agreed on before we got married... I, I'm not vain, I just, I just want to be with you..."
As Liu came out of the kitchen cracking sunflower seeds, spitting the shells onto the ground, she said:
"Oh, you've got some pretty grand plans. But if you really go to the city, who'll do all the chores at home? I advise you to stop daydreaming and get to work!"
