CHAPTER 369: A new Undead
CHAPTER 369: A new Undead
The next day I returned to the lab after breakfast. Garm had been a good boy and cycled Cassie's mixture through the corpse during the night. That meant everything was ready!
My friends accompanied me to watch the result, as did all of my undead. Even Hans joined since he wanted to witness a new undead being created.
"Ok, Kaito, this is your first time creating an undead. You have studied the runes I gave you?" I asked.
"Yes, Mistress. It shall be an honour to perform a joint raising with you." Kaito stated.
"This is sooo exciting!" Rose commented.
"It will be a curious addition to our pack." Garm mused.
"Ok, so I am relying on how you have described your perception through frostfire, Kaito. I have adjusted the raise dead spell and I am trying to concentrate its senses just below the neck. Your air mana will need to power the glyph that hopefully allows it to see." I explained.
"Your skeletal cat can manifest eyes, could this headless wolf not do the same?" Hans asked.
"Nyx is special but yes, skeletons can see through the eye holes in their skull, even if there are no visible eyes. The raise undead spell mimics a lot of sense in the same place a living creature would have them. It's hard to adjust this for a partial corpse but I have done my best to account for the missing head. The air affinity should make it easier for the creature to sense moving things. Honestly, I have spent a lot of effort just to boost the senses." I explained.
"I see, I am looking forward to your new undead." Hans replied.
I focused on the corpse again. Everything was ready and I began to link with Kaito. A joint casting with my undead was always interesting. They seemed to trust me completely, although that might be because of our link. This made the spell rather efficient. Of course, Kaito did lack experience. It made me wonder if I should encourage my undead to practice more joint castings?
As I formed my portion of the spell I felt Kaito supplying his part. His air mana made me feel a bit nauseous but I was prepared for that. I kept focusing on the spell, on the runes I had carefully prepared. My instincts guided me through some minor adjustments as the final spell formed in my mind. I poured a mixture of water and death mana into it and the spell completed!
I gasped, as the experience had been surprisingly draining for a tier two. Even Kaito looked exhausted. However, the result was impressive.

The corpse began to change as the magic took hold. The fur of the beast became black with a light blue sheen. The neck… blue flames emerged from it. The corpse rose and stood on its legs. Then the flames on the neck changed. A ghostly head of blue fire formed and opened its mouth. No sound came out.
I looked at Nyx, who seemed to concentrate pretty hard as she was staring at the new undead.
"Are you trying to make it meow?" I asked the feline.
Nyx did not reply but I saw a hint of disappointment on her boney face.
"It is magnificent." Kaito stated, as he looked at the undead wolf.
The head disappeared and the frostfire on its neck returned to normal. Kaito approached the beast and gently touched it.
"Um, is it a tier three?" Helena asked.
I shook my head. "No, it seems to be a tier two, as intended."
"You look exhausted." Helena stated, while she placed her hand on my shoulder.
"It was surprisingly draining. Hm, I think there is a connection between the new wolf and Kaito." I stated.
"Wasn't that expected? He helped to raise it." Skadi pointed out.
"Well, a joint casting does not mean two masters. Kaito was simply providing the affinity, there was no aspect of the spell that should have changed that." I mused.
"Does it even do anything? Is it similar to Rose, where Hatsumi helped you to bind her?" Cassie asked.
Kaito's head rotated to look at us, while his body was still facing the wolf. "I believe I might have some limited way to use the wolf's senses, while it is near. There does seem to be a certain synergy between us."
"He is going to be an amazing mount for you!" Rose suggested.
"Oh, you wanted a mount, didn't you, Rose?" I remembered our conversation from a few days ago.
She nodded. "If we find a suitable corpse, can I jointly raise one with you?"
"Of course!" I assured her.
"Since I am the driver a mount might be wasted on me." Kaito stated.
"I can drive the carriage too, if you want to ride." Hatsumi offered. "My uniform is not ideal for riding."
"We are not always using the carriage and that wolf can fight, probably. Do you know what it can do with the frostfire?" I asked Kaito.
Kaito shook his head. "No but I shall do my best to find out and train it appropriately."
"You also need to name it!" Cassie said.
Everyone stared at Kaito, who seemed to be deep in thought. "Does anyone have a suggestion?" He asked.
Cassie grinned. "The Frostfire Devourer!"
"Isn't the devourer a feline?" Garm asked.
"Meow." Nyx agreed with Garm.
"How about a nice, normal name?" Hatsumi suggested.
I looked at my newest undead. "I wonder if it can devour things through its neck with frostfire?"
"What do you mean by devour?" Hans asked.
"That is the ability of an undead to consume another undead. Well, they can also consume living, or recently dead creatures. It is how Nyx eats things all the time." I explained.
"Ah. Yes, your cats do seem to be rather good at devouring." Hans replied.
Nyx nodded.
"Goro, I shall name him Goro." Kaito said.
"One day an undead will have a terrifying name…" Cassie muttered.
Goro simply stood there, waiting for orders. He was just a tier two but I was still quite happy with the result. That he had some kind of connection with Kaito was interesting and made me wonder if I could recreate that with others? Maybe all of my tier threes needed a personal tier two? Maybe not all, but Rose already wanted a personal mount.
Another question was if I could link one of my tier twos closer with myself? Perhaps I could have a small undead near me all the time? I guess I did have Nyx but what about a tier two as personal defence? I had to give this some thought.
