"Why not?"

Her own mother repeatedly opposing her, Evelyn Taylor felt nothing but discontent and anger. She was also puzzled, not knowing what kind of spell Lily Turner had cast on her mother to make her so biased towards this girl.

Lily Turner, sitting on the sofa holding the baby, had not heard what Evelyn Taylor had just said. However, seeing Harriet White dragging Evelyn away, she thought to herself that Evelyn must have said something inappropriate again.
