Chapter 162 Passing the test
Chapter 162 Passing the test
The next morning, John was awakened from his deep sleep by a violent knock on the door. He opened the curtains and looked at the sun rising from the horizon. Then he remembered that he had to receive Mrs. Reginali's goods this morning. So he put on his clothes in a short time and hurriedly opened the door.
As soon as the door opened, the White Wolf Knight Centurion was waiting there.
"Sir, there is a procession of carriages outside the door, and the leader says it is sent by Lady Reginale to fulfill the contract, and asks when you can leave."
"Tell him immediately to order all White Wolf Knights to check their equipment and horses and prepare to set out."
When John arrived outside the apartment, he saw several carriages with white roofs parked on the side of the road. A stranger was discussing something with several White Wolf Knights. The carriages with the black eagle printed on them were John's family emblem, and the others were probably sent by Lady Reginale.
"Can you hurry up Lord John? It's already so bright now. It will be too late if we don't leave now."
"We must wait for Lord John's order before we can set out."
"What happened?" John asked.
After seeing John, the White Wolf Knights immediately stood up, and one of them said:
"Sir, this person insisted on urging you to leave quickly. We have tried to persuade him several times but it was no use."
"What can I do for you?" John glanced at the stranger. The clothes he wore were only slightly more fancy than those people next to the carriage. He was probably the leader of the team.
"Uh..." Seeing the real owner coming, the leader thought for a while and responded:
"We need to hurry to your territory to investigate the location of the manor and a series of other matters regarding construction. If there is any delay, we will continue the cultivation of flowers."
John, who was still half asleep, didn't think much about it. He just thought that maybe they valued this deal, which was the best. The more they valued it, the more money they could make. For him as an investor, the more money he could make, the better. He then gave the order to the White Wolf Knights next to him:
"Everyone get ready, we'll be leaving soon."
Upon receiving the news, the White Wolf Knights immediately put on their armor as quickly as possible, mounted their horses, and protected the entire convoy on both sides with weapons in hand. John was placed in the middle to prevent the front and rear of the team from being attacked by bandits.
As an international metropolis, Wyndham has the highest population density among the major cities in the country. Many people are already queuing up inside and outside the city gates of Wyndham waiting for inspection by the guards. John naturally does not need to queue up with these civilians because his motorcade needs to take the large lane.
"Oh, it's Lord John's convoy!"
Fortunately, the captain of the guard at the gate knew John. Although John had never displayed his family crest in public in Windham, the knights around him wearing wolf-shaped helmets proved the identity of the owner of the carriage.
"Excuse me, what are loaded on these carriages?" Although he was a noble, the captain of the guard still abided by his duties and said to the leading White Wolf Knight.
"These are Lady Reginale's flower seeds. Lord John wants to open an estate on his land."
After receiving the reply, the captain of the guard immediately ordered the soldiers behind to let them pass, then stepped aside and watched the convoy drive out of Wendam. As for the search in the process, it was skipped by the captain of the guard. Only a fool would search these nobles, not to mention that they were leaving the city and there were no wanted criminals recently, so there was no need to be so strict.
John in the carriage was still worried about the construction of the Nayland Territory. If the Yoda leaders paid more attention to it, would they let the knights in the southern battlefield go north to invade Franche-Comté and Nayland? Although there were some strong fortresses, John felt that he had a better chance of winning, but in the end both sides might suffer losses.
However, when John turned his attention from his inner self to reality, he found that the carriage that had just gone a short distance suddenly stopped.
"What's going on? Is it so congested leaving Wendam now?"
John thought so and stuck his head out from behind the curtains to see how many carriages were waiting to pass. However, when he opened the curtains, he found that someone had set up a checkpoint not far from the convoy, and it seemed that there were quite a lot of people in charge of this checkpoint.
However, these people were not wearing the standard armor of the Midland regular army, which meant that this checkpoint was not ordered by the king or the officials of Windham. This made John feel a little interesting. Could it be that some nobles were so bold as to run to the king's territory to collect tolls?
But John looked at the wall of Windham behind him and wondered why the city defense army didn't come out to stop them at such a short distance. It was not uncommon to see them driving away some gangsters and mercenaries on the street before.
At this moment, a scream made John shift his attention to the front, and he saw those who set up the checkpoints pulling all the people on the carriage with swords. The leader, a man in armor, was holding a piece of paper as if comparing something. John couldn't see what was on the paper because the distance was too far, but it seemed that he was looking for someone.
"grown ups!"
At this moment, the White Wolf Knight Centurion in charge of the escort rode up to John's carriage and said:
"There are about a hundred armed men ahead, checking the carriages that leave from this road. What do you think we should do?"
John thought for a moment, then ordered the centurion:
"Pass on my order, put all White Wolf Knights on alert, and then directly attack with armed force."
What a joke! If they were not the king's army, how dare such people of unknown origin search his convoy? What a level!
After receiving John's order, the centurion rode to the middle of the team and shouted to the White Wolf Knights:
"Everyone, alert!"
As the word "alert" was issued, the White Wolf Knights drew out the long swords at their waists at the same time and stared at the people around them with their sharp eyes, causing the pedestrians nearby to step back involuntarily.
"It's about to start a fight!"
I don't know who shouted this, but some people who were still queuing immediately ran to John's convoy when they saw there was a show to watch. However, under the intimidation of the fully armed White Wolf Knights, these people only dared to watch from a distance away from the carriage. Although the others were still queuing, they also turned their heads to look at the convoy, as if they were watching an epic play in the Windham Theater.
The people setting up the checkpoint not far away also noticed the commotion in the convoy, so several people with weapons rushed over here.
"Hey, hey, hey! What are you doing? Line up properly and don't delay me from doing my job!"
The leader shouted loudly to the crowd, and the onlookers immediately scattered back to the team. However, when the crowd dispersed, he saw the White Wolf Knights ready to go with long swords in their hands. He was so shocked that he was speechless for a moment.
John in the carriage also saw these people who dared to set up a checkpoint in Wendam. After taking a glance, John's first impression was: They are dressed like humans, but this dress, this momentum, stand here! Aren't they just a few robbers dressed better?
"Someone, catch them!"
As soon as these words were spoken, the White Wolf Knights in front immediately dismounted and walked towards the people on the opposite side with their weapons in hand.
Those who set up the checkpoints were not fools. They knew that these people were not easy to deal with, so they ran away.
"Sir, look at this..." Seeing several robbers running back to the opposite side, the centurion asked John for the next order.
"I'm really impressed. It's so troublesome to go home. I should have set up a Black Watch company in Wyndham earlier." John first complained about the security environment in Wyndham, and then ordered:
"Leave ten knights to guard the carriage, and the other White Wolf Knights follow me!"
John got off the carriage, mounted the centurion's horse, and led the ninety White Wolf Knights behind him and galloped towards the opposite checkpoint.
However, to John's surprise, the robbers who set up the checkpoint opposite did not run away, but gathered together and pointed their weapons at John and his men. John thought that this was definitely not an ordinary robbery by bandits, but that they had backers behind them to do so.
"Everyone, stop moving forward!" Looking at the formation formed on the opposite side, John stretched out his hand to signal the knights behind him to stop, and quickly opened the system map to see if there were any troops nearby that he could control.
It just so happened that there was a Blackwatch base in a small town not far from Windham. Perhaps the land price in Windham was too expensive, so Charlie did not choose to set up the company in Windham, but chose a relatively cheaper location near a suburban farm.
Since the area near Windham belongs to the royal territory, the public security is very good and there is no need for mercenaries for guarding. If it were not for today's incident, even John would think so. Therefore, Charlie only left a mixed mercenary team of about two hundred people here.
But it is enough to deal with this. Although the knights under John can deal with these people, they should not use force in the king's territory. Of course, if the other side is ungrateful, John does not recommend letting them feel the enthusiasm from Franche-Comté.
In the Black Watch base near a village near Windham, the mercenary officer in charge was looking out the window bored. He had not received a single decent order since he was stationed here. The last few commissions were to help the villagers harvest crops. Although he would not even look at them in the past, he was really idle now.
Just as the mercenary officer was thinking about what to eat for lunch today, a carrier pigeon flew towards the room where he was and grabbed the window frame firmly with its claws.
"Goo! Goo! Goo!"
"What's that noise?" The mercenary officer looked out the window and saw a pigeon with something tied to its legs cooing on the window.
He walked over, picked up the pigeon and untied the things on its legs. The pigeon immediately broke free from his arms, spread its wings and flew into the sky.
When the mercenary officer looked at this thing, he found that it was a piece of paper folded into small pieces. When the mercenary officer opened it, he saw the following words written on it:
"Come to the south gate of Windam as soon as possible to support John Hohenzollern."
Just when the officer thought it was someone's prank, the red John family crest printed on the paper made him realize that this might really be a letter written by Lord John.
With the idea that it is better to believe it than not, he gathered all the mercenaries and read out John's orders. After everyone was ready, they headed towards Windham.
Looking back at Wendam, John saw the bandits standing in battle formation. He was sure that they were most likely the subordinates of some nobles and had reached an agreement with the defense forces of Midland. Otherwise, they would not be so rampant. So John shouted:
"Hey! Which nobleman do you work for? Don't you know this is the king's territory?"
After a while of commotion, the armored, mustachioed robber stood up and said to John bluntly:
"Who are you? How dare you attack us?"
This curse immediately made the atmosphere at the scene gloomy. Of course, the White Wolf Knights would not allow these bastards to insult their master like this. At the signal of the centurion, the White Wolf Knights were about to dismount and chop these bastards into meat paste, but they were stopped by John.
Under the centurion's puzzled gaze, John said to him:
"Call the leader of the convoy."
After a while, the leader of the team, sweating profusely, jogged to the front of the convoy.
