Chapter 1013 - 1012: What Else Can I Do?
Regarding Watanabe Shinji's invitation, Su Xiao refused without a second thought. Although she wasn't particularly disgusted by the industry, she didn't consider it a respectable affair. To be more blunt, if she really joined the industry, it was possible that one day her family and friends might download a film she starred in, which was a chilling thought for her.
Su Xiao originally thought that after her refusal, the matter would be over. After all, in Japan, this kind of thing was quite common. If both parties were interested, it would proceed; if not, they'd laugh it off and part ways. Persistent badgering was rare.
In fact, this wasn't the first time Su Xiao encountered such inquiries, so she generally didn't pay it much mind.
However, this time the situation progressed differently from before.
Watanabe Shinji, despite being refused once, was persistent. He approached her a few more times, and although he seemed polite enough, there was gradually an undertone of threat and warning in his words.
Especially today, Watanabe Shinji even brought along a man named Saito Daikan, said to be involved with local gangs, and waited for her on her usual route near the school to have yet another "nice" chat.
At that time, Watanabe Shinji said, "Miss Keika, I personally suggest you reconsider. After all, the security in Kamakura isn't particularly good right now. I've heard there have been fires in several inns and some cases of missing persons."
Upon hearing this, Su Xiao's heart skipped a beat. She was staying at a small inn run by her uncle, and she thought she might be the next "missing person." Watanabe Shinji's words were clearly a more direct threat.
After that, Watanabe Shinji offered Su Xiao a substantial reward and some so-called benefits, like if she encountered any problems, they could help resolve them, or if she wanted to join a local gang, they could make a recommendation.
Of course, to Su Xiao, aside from the money, the other so-called benefits still amounted to threats.
Su Xiao was just a high school senior, so naturally, she was scared. She had thought about calling the police or telling her uncle, but after weighing it, she felt it might not be wise. After all, Watanabe Shinji was very tactful. Even though he threatened her, his words were impeccably polite and courteous.
Moreover, even if Su Xiao could prove that Watanabe Shinji was intimidating her, the local police might not take any action against him. In a sense, the phrase "police and criminals in cahoots" is applicable in many places, especially in a country where organized crime can exist legally.
Su Xiao wasn't particularly doubtful about whether Watanabe Shinji and Saito Daikan had gang affiliations. With Watanabe being one of the five industry giants, it would be impossible to grow to this size without some powerful backing.
So, if she called the police, it would probably only provoke Watanabe Shinji further, bringing trouble upon her and her uncle—trouble that they definitely didn't want to become a reality.
Hearing this, Su Xiao sighed, brushed a few strands of hair from her forehead, and said with a wry smile, "Now, do you understand? What can a normal high school girl like me do when faced with this kind of situation?"
Qin Ruojing looked grim. She remembered Watanabe Shinji's eyes gleaming when he saw their sisterhood; while he smiled politely, there was clearly something else hidden in those eyes.
Now hearing Su Xiao, Qin Ruojing recalled Watanabe Shinji's smile and felt a shiver run down her spine.
Qin Ruoying slammed the table and stood up suddenly, "Bastards! They're forcing good people into prostitution! These damned..."
Qin Ruojing frowned, "Keep your voice down, don't let people in the next room hear us. Sit down."
"Why? These brutes act without morals, and I can't even talk about it?"
"Using 'brute' is too sensitive. Besides, not all Japanese people are immoral; those two words are indiscriminately offensive, you know?"
Qin Ruoying took a deep breath, bit her lip, and sat back down. She had to admit her sister was right.
So far, most of the Japanese people she'd had contact with were very friendly. Evidently, as Chu Ge had said before, the world has never been simply divided into "good" or "bad" people.
As Qin Ruojing and Qin Ruoying fell silent, the atmosphere in the room turned stifling again, and no one spoke for a while.
"Xiao Xiao, I'm sorry; it was wrong of me to blame you."
Su Haidong broke the silence that seemed to hang in the air. After saying this, he ruffled his hair forcefully, paused for a few moments, then said in a helpless tone, "So... what do you plan to do?"
"What to do?" Su Xiao laughed bitterly, "What else can I do?"
Although Su Xiao didn't directly answer, her implication was clear—that she would have to do what Watanabe Shinji had suggested.
Su Haidong hesitated for a few seconds, then said, "How about... how about we return to our country? We can't afford to offend them, but we can certainly avoid them, right?"
Su Xiao's lips curled into a mocking arc, mocking both Su Haidong's proposal and the incident that caught her off guard.
"I'm about to finish high school. I can attend a very good university here. I'm completely accustomed to life here, and with just the money I earn from working during school holidays, I can buy a decent car. Why should I go back? Also, if I keep running away from problems, there will eventually be nowhere left for me to hide."
"But..." Su Haidong's lips moved, wanting to say something to persuade his sister, yet he didn't know what to say, his expression full of conflict.
"There's no 'but', let's leave it at that. I can be an actress once, and there's plenty of pay to be had. It's no big deal."
Su Xiao clearly didn't want to continue the topic. She showed a smile that's hard to really call a smile and turned to look at Chu Ge and the Qin sisters. "That's the situation. I've finished speaking, has your curiosity been satisfied? Are you satisfied?"
No one responded.
"Alright, you all should stay here for the night and leave this place early tomorrow. I sense that Watanabe Shinji looks at you two like a wolf seeing meat; I'm afraid he's already got his eyes on you. I'm tired, I'm going back to rest. Sleep well, goodnight."
After speaking, Su Xiao got up and left the room. Su Haidong watched his sister's retreating back disappear, then stood up from a chair, glanced at Chu Ge and the others, seemingly wanting to say something, but ultimately didn't say a word and quietly left the room.
The door closed, and after ten seconds or so, Qin Ruoying looked at Chu Ge, "Brother-in-law, what do you think?"
Chu Ge shook his head, "I'm thinking nothing."
Qin Ruoying stared at Chu Ge intently and said earnestly, "I want to help that girl, can you help?"
"Conventional means probably won't help."
Chu Ge still shook his head.
"As for unconventional means, I don't think it's worth doing it for her. These words are just her side of the story. You can't believe all she says unconditionally just because she's from Hua Country, right? Moreover, haven't you noticed? Her resistance to this matter doesn't seem particularly firm."
Qin Ruoying hesitated for a moment and asked, "What do you mean by unconventional means?"
"Silently killing Watanabe Shinji, straightforward and simple, or contacting a friend I haven't spoken to in a while and having a word with Watanabe Shinji."
Chu Ge didn't say this because he didn't plan on doing it. Firstly, he's not familiar with the girl named Su Xiao, and secondly, the girl didn't ask for their help and wasn't extremely opposed to the matter.
Chu Ge is not someone without compassion; sometimes he does shout out when witnessing injustice. But there's too much injustice in the world, and if he shouted at everything, even a trained voice would develop issues.
His previous assistance to several women around him was backed by compelling reasons, but regarding Su Xiao's matter, he doesn't have a reason that could convince himself to help.
Noticing that Chu Ge hadn't spoken for a while, Qin Ruoying's mood became even lower. She said, "I'm tired too," and then left the room for another room they'd booked.
Only Chu Ge and Qin Ruojing remained in the room. Chu Ge patted Qin Ruojing's shoulder, "It's quite late, wash up and go to sleep."
Qin Ruojing understood Chu Ge's feelings, softly replied, "Mm," and didn't dwell on the topic further. After freshening up, they turned off the lights.
The night deepened.
A sudden gust of wind arose, moving the clouds in the sky, covering the faint crescent moon, and rolling an abandoned can down the empty street with a clatter in the darkness.
A black stray cat perched on a wall endlessly meowed, with emerald green eyes, seemingly in heat or perhaps venting something, annoying anyone nearby who hadn't yet fallen asleep.
"Tap... tap... tap..."
In this quiet night, along this empty street, a set of footsteps suddenly sounded.
Hearing these distinctly clear nighttime footsteps, the black cat stopped meowing, turned its head towards the source of the sound, blinked, shook its fur, jumped off the wall, and ran away.
The footsteps continued, heading closer to the small hotel where Chu Ge was staying.
